Dental implants are widely popular in today’s dental society for a number of reasons: Implants offer patients a foundation for new restorative teeth where natural teeth are missing or have been extracted. The new implant offers patients the opportunity to regain normal function of the tooth without being forced to resort to a bridge or a denture.
The tooth structure is comprised of two primary sections: the root and the crown. The root section of the tooth is below the gum line. A dental implant acts as the restorative for this portion of the new tooth. The metal implant acts as an anchor in the jawbone.
We begin with the surgical placement of the implant. Under regular dental anesthetic, your gum tissue is opened and the dentist secures the in the jawbone. The tissue is then sutured closed. In spite of this being a surgical procedure, there is seldom any significant discomfort reported. This process can take from 1-3 hours depending on the number of implants being placed. This implant will be left untreated for a period of 3-6 months. During this time, your bone grows around the implant in a process called osseointegration. During osseointegration, a removable crown may be utilized, allowing normal chewing and the preservation of your cosmetic appearance. Next we attach an abutment to the tooth by exposing the top of the implant and placing the abutment. This part of the implant supports the final crown. Finally, an impression is taken of the implant and a final restoration is crafted. This restoration is both comfortable and cosmetically pleasing. Your completed implant is now fully functional, allowing you to confidently resume your normal activities.
