Inlays and Onlays
Inlays and onlays are sometimes referred to as partial crowns. Partial crowns are utilized when there is still a healthy enamel portion of the tooth. An inlay or onlay is essentially a puzzle piece being fitted into the remaining portion of the tooth. This process increases tooth strength. This piece is typically crafted out of porcelain or gold, but can also be made from composite material. Your dentist will make the appropriate determination as to which restoration will work for your specific situation.
The dentist will use an inlay when there is not damage to any of the cusps of your tooth; the inlay is essentially placed within these cusps. An onlay will be used when there is slightly more damage to the tooth structure; an onlay is placed over at least one of the cusps on the tooth.
About the Procedure:
When we have decided to move forward using either an inlay or onlay, we set aside two to three appointments for the entire process. Although most inlays and onlays need only two visits, there is sometimes a need for a third visit to ensure a proper fit.
We being by removing all the decay in the tooth. We then take an impression of the tooth, which is sent to our lab where your new restoration is created. If necessary, a temporary restoration is provided. Our temporary restorations resemble your natural teeth so you can continue with your daily life without worrying about a missing or incompatible tooth.
On the second visit we will fit the inlay/onlay comfortably into your mouth. We then make every effort to ensure your new restoration feels just like one of your natural teeth. Finally we cement the inlay/onlay into your mouth, leaving your tooth looking new and natural, and in perfect health.
